Thursday, April 30, 2020 | 1:30 p.m. EDT via BlueJeans: https://bluejeans.com/9455996635 Hi Everyone! My name is Sam Arizpe and I am one of the work-study students at the GIC! I am a senior (crazy to think that I am graduating in less than a month) and I decided to study Finance and Entrepreneurship with a minor in Sociology during my time at Penn. Hopefully you read Dan Gonzalez’s article in last week’s newsletter as he shared some very valuable advice regarding the power of networking! I have chosen to focus today’s article on the Penn FLASH tool that the GIC is piloting and the many benefits that the tool can provide for FGLI students. The tool connects FGLI students with FGLI alumni in a format that allows students to ask quick questions or set up longer conversations about careers and post-grad life in general. As a graduating senior, I really wish the tool had been around when I was a freshman and I hope the points below help emphasize the value that this tool can provide you in your professional pursuits! Learn about Different Careers & Industries The amount of alumni on the tool is amazing and demonstrates the willingness of FGLI alumni to help out our growing community. The GIC has managed to onboard alumni from various industries ranging from finance and technology to medicine and community development professionals and everything in between! Alumni are always enthusiastic to share details about their industries and Penn FLASH allows you to interact with them in many ways. Whether you are very interested in the field and need specific advice on recruiting and breaking into the industry or are just interested in learning more about a certain industry, Penn FLASH can help connect you to the right people who are willing to help! Get Advice on Issues From Someone Who Understands As FGLI students, we experience struggle in navigating spaces that we are not familiar with. From transitioning into college to learning about careers and graduate school applications, we are the resilient trailblazers that have managed to succeed despite the odds being against us. FGLI alumni are well aware of the difficulties of being FGLI and they can give very valuable advice on many topics that concern FGLI students. From learning how to dress in a professional workplace and navigating office politics to balancing family and work and moving for career purposes, FGLI students face unique challenges related to the workplace. While it may be intimidating to ask questions that are a bit more personal, I would encourage you to use Penn FLASH to get advice from people who understand what you are going through! Meet Interesting People from All Over the World Penn FLASH also grants you the opportunity to talk to alums who have worked around the world pursuing their passions. Whether you are considering staying in Philly or going across the world after graduation, there are alums that will give you insight on the different trajectories your life can take after graduating from Penn. I hope this article has been helpful in detailing a few of the many benefits that the Penn FLASH tool brings to our FGLI community! I would also like to invite you all to Career Pathways and Pivots on Friday, May 1st at 2pm! Dan and I will be moderating a discussion with two alums that will provide advice on how they navigated the various pivots and pathways they have experienced in their careers. We hope you can join us and the session will be recorded for those who cannot make it! Penn FLASH Presents: Career Pathways and Pivots Join us for a live discussion with a couple of great FGLI alums, LaRhonda Brown-Barrett ENG’89 and Ben Huynh W'14, asking them about their careers and any lessons they've learned along the way regarding how to pivot. To pivot means to change course, or in the case of careers and jobs, switching career fields REGISTER HERE: https://forms.gle/vEpawXPRJyiuuuUE7 Friday, May 1 | 2pm EDT | Blue Jeans: https://bluejeans.com/9455996635 Moderated by Louis Lin C’20 and Sam Arizpe W’20 Hosted by the GIC, FGLI Program, and Penn First Plus Alumni Alumni Guests

It's Dan from the GIC here :) For those of you who don't know me, I'm a senior in the College, majoring in Health and Societies. I'm writing this short article here to talk about making connections (or networking)! I know this is something a lot of students get nervous about or feel weird doing, but it's a very valuable skill to start developing. To tell you the truth, you've probably been networking since high school! Building relationships is what got you those recommendation letters to get into Penn! Doesn't that make you feel like you've already started something? See, I'm not here to tell you that you've got no networking skills, everyone is different and I just want to share a few lessons I've learned as a senior. Hopefully you find these all helpful and share with others! ● Ask for advice, not a job. If you have this idea in your head that networking means walking up to a stranger asking them for a job, you're not wrong but that approach probably won't work in most cases. I've found it's much more appropriate to just get to know someone a little bit, and when they ask you about what you're interested in, let them know your career interests. Then they might give you some feedback, and you can ask them for follow up (that is, their business card or LinkedIn profile) ● Always follow up. If you felt like you met someone and made a genuine connection, AND got their contact info, send them an email. The sooner the better. I try to work with a 48 hour window or a week at the latest. You can just say a few lines about enjoying meeting the person, anything you remember about them, and reiterating who you are and what you're up to. I think this is more to show them you're serious and they might even start thinking about you whenever something comes their way. ● Penn alumni are people, too. I know sometimes it feels intimidating to talk to someone you've never met before, but you do that all the time at Penn. You don't always have to greet a potential connection with "what's your industry?" If it's a Penn alum, maybe just say hi, introduce yourself, and ask them a simple question, like "what did you live in?" These are just a few lessons I've learned, and I'll keep sharing more soon! Never hesitate to reach out to me if you have questions. Also, please make sure to tune in to an event I'm moderating with Penn Alumni! Sam Aripze from Collective Success and I will be having a live discussion with a couple of great alumni, just asking them about their careers and any lessons they've learned along the way regarding how to pivot. To pivot means to change course, or in the case of careers and jobs, switching career fields. This is super important given how everything has changed with Coronavirus. Mark your calendars for May 1st at 2pm! The session will be recorded! Stay healthy and stay safe! Dan Gonzalez Join the GIC every Tuesday night at 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. for FruiTea Discussions hosted by SoYeong Jeong, Intercultural Intern, and Toyce Holmes, FGLI Coordinator.
Graduate Associate (GA) Positions in College Houses and Academic Services (CHAS) are now open! If you are not familiar with these positions you can think of them as resident advisors or RAs in the residence halls. In the college houses (similar to residence halls at other institutions) both undergraduates and graduate students will be hired to fill the role traditionally called RA. This is a great opportunity for graduate students to make strong connections with undergraduates and their fellow GAs. It is also a great opportunity for free housing and a partial meal plan.
Applications are open now through May 22. More information, details about our virtual info sessions including the one this coming Monday, and the application can be found at https://www.collegehouses.upenn.edu/join/ga |
